November 6 Taking the Rap: Women Doing Time for Society’s Crimes – Women’s Perspectives on Prison: Presentation & Panel

Certain Days: Freedom for Political Prisoners Calendar

122 Bond St, Toronto 7:00-9:30 – //www.facebook.com/events/481484329001253/

Join us for an evening of women sharing perspectives on prison. This event is a celebration of Ann Hansen’s latest book, Taking the Rap, released this summer from Between the Lines Press, as well as the launch of 2019 Certain Days: Freedom for Political Prisoners calendar, featuring the theme of Health/Care.

Location: Ryerson Image Arts Building, 122 Bond St., Toronto

Room IMA 307

About the speakers:

Ann Hansen has spent many years in prison and on parole as a consequence of her participation in a radical anarchist group that carried out a series of bombings against Canadian government and corporate targets in the early 1980s. When Ann was arrested along with the four other members of what would be known as the Vancouver 5, her long-time commitment to prison abolition suddenly became much more personal. The bonds and experiences that she would share with other imprisoned women in the years to come only strengthened her resolve.

Joey Twins, spirit name Redstone Woman Who Walks With Fire, is a Cree True Spirit Woman from Alberta and a knowledge keeper, spiritual advisor, and motivational speaker.

Joan Ruzsa is the coordinator of Rittenhouse, an abolitionist organization that advocates for community alternatives to incarceration.

Sara Falconer is a member of the the Certain Days collective. The calendar is a joint fundraising and educational project between outside organizers in Montreal, Hamilton, New York and Baltimore, with political prisoners being held in maximum-security prisons.

This event is organized with the support of the Certain Days collective; the 2019 Certain Days Freedom for Political Prisoners calendar will be available at the launch. Copies of Ann’s book will also be available for sale.

Venue is wheelchair accessible, including the bathrooms. This event is free of charge and supported by Ryerson’s School of Image Arts, Documentary Media Department, and Criminology Department.
